first direct QR codes
added: 1 August 2011
Do you see QR codes as useful and innovative? Do you think they would be relevant to future pieces of first direct communication?
In detail
A QR code is a certain type of barcode which, when scanned by a smart phone, will take you to the URL that the code has been linked to. It's a useful marketing tool that provides users with a quick and easy way to get more information.
We want to find out whether QR codes are seen as useful and innovative by first direct customers, so we know whether they would be relevant to future pieces of communication. Simply scan this QR code and visit the URL linked to it to watch our Offset Mortgages Explained video. Once you've experienced the process, please leave feedback and let us know what you think of it.
N.B. While many Android™, Nokia, and Blackberry phones have pre-installed QR code readers, the iPhone® doesn't automatically include one. If you haven't already installed a QR code reader on your iPhone, you'll need to download one to scan this QR code.
Please note, you may incur data charges to download a QR reader application, depending on your mobile device's airtime tariff.

QR codes will quickly be replaced by far deeper and richer customer interactions enabled by NFC. These will allow virtual organisations, like FD, to "reach out and touch" the physical world, enabling new services for your customers, far beyond just connecting them to a website.
useful but not amazing - NFC would be great in banks. touch your phone to an information point to get more info on ur phone etc.
While QR codes are a useful way of moving from printed media to an online resource, they are not particularly relevant to my interaction with FD - which, by it's very nature, is already online. So, by all means, include them on printed marketing materials - I can't see a reason not to - but don't get carried away with their importance.
As a 70 year old who has been with FD since its inception and who likes to keep up with the latest technology I honestly cannot see how a QR code makes banking easier. Keep it simple please.
Personally, I do not see the point in QR codes. If a code is supposed to take me to FD mortgages for example, I would have to get my phone, unlock it, find the barcode app, start it, scan the code, then wait for the net connection to establish and load the page. After trying there codes I have found just remembering and keying, say, firstdirect.com/mortgages into my browser simpler and quicker.
I'm also an adult. 51 years old, and I think QR codes are very useful when used in the right context. For example, if you write to me I guess you could include a QR code which would take me straight to the relevant area of your website if I wanted to go online to subscribe to a new product or service (for example). So, good idea, need to keep with the times. thanks for being such a great bank!!

Group.
I think QR-Codes and NFC are two different means to the same end. Initiatives with QR-Codes will follow the same conceptual mechanics and will be most easily adapted to NFC - when it is actually there. Go on, I'm eager to see what what fd are up to!
